Déjà vu

This is a great sideshow RAK sent me, and is sure to rekindle some old memories (unless you're too young to know the lyrics to the Micky Mouse Club song). This picture of a 1958 Plymouth Fury sure took me back to some not-too-fond mems. Got my driver's license driving the cheaper Savoy model; the family car. It had a PowerFlite 2 speed Push Button transmission, which was way cool (at the time). Our car was painted Bluebonnet Blue, with an optional white top.

The very first time I drove her as a licensed driver was to pick up my sister, and her girlfriend Leslie at the Jr. High. "Pick them up, drop Leslie off, and come right home," my mother instructed.

There was long oval driveway approach to the school, and I could see the two of them standing there as I approached. Making the final turn I floored the accelerator, an act similar to a Peacock showing his colors, and promptly went into a spin. I was stopped by a curb that was just about an inch higher than the car's drive train. In short, I had gone hard-aground.

About a year later, just about the time I had paid for damage from that mishap, I had the family car for two hours one Saturday. My dad limited me to 50 miles, and took beginning and ending odometer readings. Friends from Chicago, from whence we had just moved, were visiting, and we were all headed to see Washington D.C. the next morning. I was instructed to have the tank filled with gas.

I picked up my friend Wally, and we drove to Beaver Springs swimming hole in Cockeysville. Pulling into the lot, Wally said whoa, there's Sharon and Nancy. I slowed, and just before coming to a stop I pressed the "R" button. I forget what sound it made, but there was one. And the car would not drive in reverse. OMFG! We tried everything.

It was here that I invoked my version of Cal Coolidge's "If you see ten troubles coming down the road, you can be sure that nine will run into the ditch before they reach you." Which meant, it'll fix itself. I pulled into the carport, hoping beyond hope (I thought my chances pretty good) that a good night's rest would cure the sumbitch.

Now, my bedroom was located on the wall next to the driveway. The next morning my mom poked her head in to ask if I'd changed my mind about going. I had not. There was no way I was getting into that car.

I heard the happy chatter as they piled into Blue Beauty. I heard four doors slam. Hail Mary full of grace ... The car started right up, a good sign. ... the Lord is with thee ... *heard kind of a "clunk" sound* .. hallowed be thy ...*sound of engine racing*.

Oh shit! Dad started the engine, and restarted it several times. I heard the hood being opened, some muttering ("What the Deuce?!?"), then slamming shut. Then my bedroom door flew open.

"What? You're kidding?"

I think that's what I said when he asked me to explain why his car would not back up. Then I confessed. But offered a ray of hope and sunlight. (I am not making this up) "It still goes forward. We can push it out of the driveway, and you can go to DC, and not park where you have to back-up."

He was very, very pissed. Very pissed. It was a year before I paid that off (mowing lawns). I still hate that fkn car. What a P.O.S.

PS - I used to drag race it at the US 40 Drag-strip in York, PA. When you lost, which I always did on the first race, they threw a bucket of water on your windshield to wash off your classification and number. My dad would always ask on Sunday morning where I was to get "chalky stuff" all over the hood last night? I would always answer, "I dunno."

As one after another of MoSup's flights are canceled (beginning last night fer chrisake) we've been jockeying to get her home from Florida today.

As things stand, her current flight, scheduled to depart in 3 hours, is still good. But flights are going into the dumper faster than a Redskin's lead with 2 minutes to play. If she doesn't get home today, it looks like it will be Monday at the earliest, maybe even Wednesday before she gets home. Which brings me to a dilemma. Do I start cleaning the house now? Or roll the dice?

I've used the Smooth Wheel add-on for some time, and you should too ( if you use Firefox or Mozilla). It enables a smooth screen roll when using your mouse scroll wheel. Lately however, I noticed some rather severe hang time, as have you prolly, if you think about it.. You can stop that jerkiness by keeping this open in one of your tabs. If this sounds like voodoo to you, you're not completely wrong. In fact, you prolly don't even need Smooth Wheel to see improvement. Give it a try. You're welcome.

This tells you what I've been doing since 12:01. Been putting it off, but I got cables to stream NetFlix to the TV, and a new tuner card that, hopefully, will allow me to once again record TV directly. Stuff's been staring at me, making me feel lazy.

I've been using my little Canon A560 to shoot the Tivo'd video off the television screen. As you can see from the Glock 18 video, the quality is good, but the audio has that "tinny" sound, and it adds additional steps to produce. My old TV tuner won't capture the HD signal, so this new card ought to put me back in business. It's been about two years since I opened the box to fiddle with stuff, and horry clap, talk about dust buildup. Nice feeling of satisfaction to wipe the innards clean. Then my wireless keyboard wouldn't work. Tried every damn thing for most of 2 hours. Before trucking off to Office Depot., I just now pounded all the keys, and threw it onto my Lazy-Boy. Sumbitch works now.

Circa 1985, I caught the tail end an old West morality film - on a Christian family entertainment cable channel, of all places. The plot was that a townsman got drunk, drove his wagon recklessly through town, and wound up killing a child. This wasn't a Gunsmoke episode, but had that flavor.

When I tuned in, the drunk was about to be hanged, having been found guilty of murder. Everyone in the town was sorry, his wife was on hand, but it was justice. The consequence of indulging in reckless behavior that harmed others.

I was waiting for the sheriff to stop it, or something, but damned if he didn't get hanged! This was before Lonesome Dove's famous "Jake's Fate" hanging, but I found myself unsettled by it in the same manner. Not that I disagreed; I had just become used to modern molly-coddling sensibilities.

Does anyone know the name of this episode? I am forever wanting to use it in discussions with hard core Libertarians, as an example of changes that are necessary before society makes everything legal, more or less (which in theory, I too advocate). Gracia.

MoSup is blessed with uncanny senses of hearing and taste, much to my dismay at times, ahem. She can, for instance, tell if I sectioned her grapefruit with a knife used to slice garlic, and not washed. Usually she let's things like that go, but when it comes to bacon she's fussy and outspoken.

The Greeper and Joe bought me a gourmet bacon of the month deal once, and we're talking expensive stuff here. It was all quite good, and served to set a new taste standard. Ordinarily I buy whatever's on sale. Gwaltney, Smithfield, Giant brand. All crap to her. Last month BJ's had a deal on Oscar Meyer, so I bought several packs, and that more than passed muster. It has taste, and renders little fat. Last night I bought Oscar Meyer Extra-Thick (Applewood Smoked) from Giant (2 for $7). Horry Clap! This is the best bacon evah!

Normally a pound of bacon will yield two of these glasses of fat. Look at this! Maybe 2 TBSP. And, the bacon is T-A-S-T-Y-licious. I will buy this stuff, even at full price from now on.

GPS and Bread Crumbs

I bought MoSup that Garmin GPS I talked about the other day, for her birthday. Garmin 265WT. Actually, it was you guys who bought it for her, since I used my Pay Pal money. She thanked me for you.

We're prolly the last people here to get one, and I'm blown away. It did take several hours to get the initial satellite fix (too may trees here), get updated maps installed, etc. Then I input addresses of peeps she goes to see, shopping, etc. The upshot is that I'm something of an expert now; she can't turn it on. MoSup's also worried that someone will steal it, which is a real problem. A friend had his factory installed GPS ripped from his dashboard. This is what I can't figure out. The thing has a serial number. The thing accesses satellites. Why can't I report it stolen, and Garmin tracks it's whereabouts? First time used, the cops have a pin-point location. Why not?

The other exciting thing for me was, and I'm pretty embarrassed to tell you, what with me being a Kordon Blue trained chef, but it's Panko! Japanese bread crumbs. HFS! Never used Panko before for three reasons.

Last night I used Panko to bread some (I think I'm getting Alzheimer's ... the flat fish. Flounder!) Flounder, and WOW. I want to "Panko" everything now. I'm going to try fried peanut butter. Dip some flattened, chilled PB in flour, egg wash, then Panko, and fry. I'll let you know. Panko cannot be beat for crunch.

Back to the GPS. While I was playing with it, another thought struck me. Garmin had better get into the cell phone business, or go bust. This thing looks like an iPhone, and I'm told iPhones have the GPS built in already, right? Damn, if I'd waited another 6 months, I prolly buy this Garmin for $12.95 from Woot. One other thing. I forgot. Never mind.

The Looloobumpucker story

The Looloobumpucker sammich® was named after my daughter, and invented as far as I know by me. It was the kid's favorite meal. So, in the process of blogging (since 2002), I opened several blogs to experiment with. One named after the sammich. It's appeal today is it's in old Blogger format. The newer format will not accept the code I use for rollovers, pop-up text, etc., and I just don't feel like starting over. Since this blog was meant to mirror Curmudgeonly & Skeptical, without the Curmudgeonly, or politics, it was an easy construction. Now you know the rest of the story, and I'm hungry.

There's another reason why so many of us can't sleep. Our gummint. Politics. Democrats. The economy. I know three women & a dude who've stopped reading blogs altogether ( if I named them, so do you). They can't stand to read the news any more. At least one is under doctor's orders to stay away. Besides me.
